Summer festivals abound in Rhode Island, and this weekend you have the opportunity to catch the much-anticipated Tiverton Four Corners Art & Artisan Festival. Now in its 22nd year, this event takes place in the Mill Pond area of the historic Tiverton Four Corners village. The gathering draws a variety of local and regional artists as well as entertainment. Attendees will enjoy performances by Gary Fish, Gina Cimmelli and Kim LaMothe as well as dance by Barbara Donahue. Arts and goods for sale range from glass, pottery, home furnishings and woodworks to handmade clothing, body products, wearable art and photography.

IndieArts Fest, held in Greater Kennedy Plaza in downtown Providence, is a one-day festival celebrating the self-determined creativity of our fair city. From the Bank of America Skating Center to the fountain in Burnisde Park, there will be live presentations of more than 20 local and national bands, dance performances and spoken word artists. If you have well-groomed facial hair, boast of your efforts in the Burnside Best Facial Hair Contest. For local artists and crafters, check out the Arts Exchange in the park, or visit the skating center for a heated Providence Roller Derby bout. And for fresh, locally made brews, the Indie Brew Beer Garden awaits you.

Nylo Hotel and The BRU Crew will be hosting a Stone Soul Picnic on the banks of the Pawtuxet River off the deck outside The Loft at Nylo. Attendees will be able to stroll around the 3,000 square foot deck overlooking the river or step out onto the grassy bank for picnic games like badminton and Frisbee. Music will be played by the radio station 95.5 WBRU, while dollar hamburgers and hot dogs are sold. You also can enjoy signature summer drinks, such as daiquiris, Nylo-made sangria or house-made lemonade.

The Newport Black Ships Festival celebrates the 1854 establishment of friendly trade relations between the United States and Japan, secured by Newport’s own Commodore Matthew C. Perry with the Treaty of Kanagawa. The four-day festival features more than 50 community-oriented events that allow attendees to see, sample and experience authentic Japanese arts, foods, performances and traditions. Enjoy opening ceremonies at Touro Park, the Newport and Shimodea Sister City Gala at Rosecliff, sailing on a tall ship with sake and sushi, or the Taiko Drum Festival at the Newport Yachting Center, among many other events.

Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar presents an evening that celebrates wine and creativity with artist Thomas Arvid and Napa Valley winery Far Niente Wines. The “Art of Food & Wine” event features a four-course menu paired with a special wine variety. Chris Watson, Fleming’s wine manager, will lead guests through wine selections. Thomas Arvid’s wine-focused still-life work will be displayed on the walls of the restaurant. Guests will dine on miso-glazed striped bass, cumin-crusted pork tenderloin and an assortment of artisanal cheeses.

Tucked away on the Capital City’s East Side is a buzzing little neighborhood known as Wayland Square. This Saturday, the location will be closed off at Medway and Angell streets for a block party event in celebration of the history of the area. Attendees may sample food from local restaurants, enjoy live music and ballroom dancing lessons, as well as find bargains from local boutiques at the sidewalk sale. Restaurants include Farmstead, Haruki East, Waterman Grille and Rasoi, among others. Live music will be provided by Zuma Band, and Pow Science will be doing demonstrations.

Save The Bay is hosting its Summer Paddle on Saturday morning, and if the weather is predicted accurately, then you will want head to Barrington and watch the sun on the water. Enjoy casual paddling with family or friends around one of the best ecosystems in Narragansett Bay, Barrington’s Hundred Acre Cove. According to Trails.com, this paddle is a surprise to find in the middle of a bustling suburban town so close to the state’s capital city. Paddlers should plan on enjoying the sights as a group.

The 40th annual Newport Music Festival continues this weekend with a program that features a Friday morning concert called “Richness of Russians.” The event highlights the works of Russian composers with performances by Jiøí Bárta on cello, Bernadene Blaha on piano, Jakov Jakoulov also on piano, Gilad Karni on viola, Pedja Mužijeviæ on piano and Eugene Tzikindelean on violin. The concert will be set in the elegant foyer of The Elms. The following two days of events are full of opportunities to see rare music in the palatial settings of the Newport Mansions.

Currently, AS220 is hosting an exhibition of C.W. Roelle’s work, and tonight you have a chance to hear the master divulge the logic behind his creativity. Roelle has curled himself into a niche of Providence art: no one else does similar work. He is known for highly structured pieces created by using a pair of needle-nose pliers to shape and crimp lightweight steel wire. Roelle's three-dimensional drawings are often based on old photographs and range from small portraits and landscapes to more complex scenes with multiple figures.
